Matthew | From Be-Attitudes to Do-Attitudes | Week 9

In his sermon on Matthew 5:13-16, Pastor J Lloyd challenged the congregation to move from the "be-attitudes" to the "do-attitudes," actively living out their faith as salt and light in the world. He explained that salt serves three primary purposes in the Christian life: acting as a preservative to ward off the spiritual decay around us, adding the flavor of Christ that leaves people wanting more of what we have in Jesus, and creating a thirst that only the living water of Christ can satisfy. Pastor J Lloyd warned against losing our saltiness through compromise and worldliness, which renders us ineffective and counterproductive to the gospel.
Regarding light, Pastor J Lloyd emphasized that Christians are called to be revelatory lights that expose both sin and righteousness, just as Jesus was the light of the world during His earthly ministry. Using the analogy of glow-in-the-dark material, he explained that believers must spend time with Christ to be "charged" with His light so they can shine in the darkness. He challenged the congregation to move beyond the children's song "This Little Light of Mine," arguing that if Christ lives in us, we possess a "darkness-destroying, darkness-fleeing light" that cannot be hidden. The goal is always to point others to Jesus and bring glory to the Father, not to ourselves.
