Advent: Peace

In this sermon from his Advent series "the light has come," Pastor Joel explores the difference between worldly peace and Christian peace. While worldly peace is merely the absence of conflict or trouble—dependent on favorable circumstances—Christian peace is a deep sense of calm grounded in faith in Jesus Christ that can coexist with chaos.
Pastor Joel highlights three distinctives of Christian peace: it coexists with turmoil rather than requiring perfect circumstances; it's rooted in a relationship with God, not in our situations; and it involves surrender rather than control. Using John 14:27, he emphasizes that Jesus offers a peace fundamentally different from what the world gives—a peace that, as Paul writes in Philippians 4:7, "surpasses all understanding." Joel concludes by challenging the congregation to reconcile broken relationships, referencing Jesus' teaching in Matthew 5 about making peace with others before bringing gifts to the altar.
