How to Live as the Family of God | Building a Gospel-Shaped Church | Week 7
In this sermon on 1 Timothy 5, Pastor Joel examines Paul's instructions to Timothy about how Christians should treat one another as family. He highlights that we are to treat older men as fathers, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters with absolute purity. He commends the congregation for already embodying this family-like atmosphere that makes visitors feel welcome.
Pastor Joel then focuses on Paul's specific instructions regarding the care of widows, particularly those who have no family to support them. He explains that while our modern context differs from the first century, the principle remains the same: the church should be the primary source of help for widows who are truly alone. He identifies Paul's four categories of widows (older faithful widows with relatives, older faithful widows without relatives, older unfaithful widows, and younger widows) and discusses the church's responsibility to each group. The sermon concludes with a challenge for each church member to personally consider how they are caring for the widows in their congregation.
