Matthew | When Jesus Says Follow Me | Week 6

In this sermon from Matthew 4, Pastor Joel uses a powerful example with about dual citizenship to illustrate the choice every believer must make between kingdoms. When his friend became a U.S. citizen, he had to reject his Ethiopian citizenship because he couldnt hold dual citizenship—similarly, when Jesus called His first disciples with the words "follow me," they had to choose which kingdom would receive their allegiance.
He breaks down Jesus's call by first examining who the "me" is—the Messiah, Son of David, Emmanuel, the King of Kings who conquered sin and brought light to those dwelling in darkness. Then he explores what it means to "follow," emphasizing three key aspects: complete abandonment (like the disciples who immediately left their nets), joyful dependence (recognizing that Jesus chose us, not the other way around), and faithful obedience (being committed learners rather than casual listeners). Joel challenges the congregation to move beyond mere church attendance and examine whether their lives truly reflect citizenship in heaven rather than conformity to this world, warning against the lukewarm Christianity that's too common in Western churches today.
