Characteristics of a Godly Life | Building a Gospel-Shaped Church | Week 10

Pastor Joel wraps up the church's journey through First Timothy by examining Paul's final charge to Timothy in 1 Timothy 6:11-21, particularly the command to "fight the good fight of faith." He notes how Paul bookends his letter with warfare language, beginning in 1 Timothy 1:18 with "wage the good warfare" and concluding with the call to fight. He emphasizes that every born-again believer is engaged in spiritual warfare, citing passages like Ephesians 6:12, which reminds us that "we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness."

Drawing from his recent trip to Ephesus, he paints a vivid picture of the multicultural, pagan city where Timothy ministered, complete with the temple of Artemis and the rioting described in Acts 19. He uses John MacArthur's outline to present four characteristics of a "person of God": being known by what you run from (sinful actions, desires, and thoughts), what you chase after (righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness), what you fight for (publicly defending the gospel), and what you remain faithful to (God's commandments until Christ returns). Joel challenges believers to stop "flirting with disaster" by seeing how close they can get to sin without crossing the line, and instead to run from temptation while pursuing godly character.
