Matthew | Born to Be King: Why the Genealogy Matters | Week 1

Pastor Joel launches an exciting journey through Matthew's Gospel, starting with what might seem like a boring genealogy but is actually a strategic presentation of Jesus as the promised king. Matthew wrote to Jewish Christians who needed validation of Jesus's identity, and he begins by establishing Jesus's royal pedigree through three groups of 14 generations - from Abraham to David, from David to the Babylonian exile, and from the exile to Christ. This lineage was crucial because pedigree mattered tremendously in Jewish culture, just as priests had to prove their Levitical heritage.
The genealogy reveals Jesus as both the son of David (fulfilling the kingly line) and the son of Abraham (through whom all nations would be blessed). Matthew includes four women in the lineage, three with questionable backgrounds, demonstrating that the gospel extends to all people regardless of ethnicity or past. The names "Jesus" (meaning "Yahweh saves") and "Christ" (meaning "anointed one" or Messiah) further establish His identity as both Savior and King. The pastor connects multiple Old Testament prophecies from 2 Samuel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel that point to this promised Davidic king, showing how Jesus fulfills centuries of prophetic expectation. He concludes by challenging listeners to examine their response to Jesus's Kingship, asking whether they will be like the religious leaders who reject Him, the crowds who follow conditionally, or the disciples who surrender unconditionally to His lordship.
