Matthew | Faithful Covenant in a Casual Culture | Week 13

Continuing his verse-by-verse journey through the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew, Pastor Joel takes on one of the more sensitive passages in chapter 5 — Jesus's teaching on divorce. Drawing from both Matthew 5:31-32 and Matthew 19:3-9, Joel lays out eight points, beginning with God's foundational design for marriage: one man, one woman, for life, as established in Genesis 2:24. He walks through the "exception clause," explaining that sexual immorality — the Greek word porneia — is the Biblically permissible ground for divorce, while also acknowledging that divorce, even when permitted, is never commanded. God's desire, Joel emphasizes, is always reconciliation and restoration.

Joel also provides important historical context, explaining the two competing rabbinic schools of thought in Jesus's day — the strict school of Shammai and the far more permissive school of Hillel, which had reduced grounds for divorce to absurd trivialities like burnt suppers and unflattering nose shapes. Jesus, Joel argues, was forcefully pushing back against that kind of casual dismissal of the marriage covenant. He closes not with condemnation, but with grace — reminding the congregation that God forgives the repentant, that we cannot undo the past, and that the call going forward is to pursue the sanctity of marriage with the same mercy God extends to each of us every day.
