Pastor J opens with a lighthearted story about pranking his sister with a garden hose, then uses that image to set the stage — this morning is going to feel like drinking from a fire hose. Tasked by Pastor Joel with covering Matthew chapters 8 and 9 in just two weeks, Jay takes the church on a 10,000-foot view of these two chapters, which are structured around three sections of miracles, each separated by Jesus's teaching on the cost of following Him. The miracles, Jay points out, aren't really about the people receiving them — they're about pointing to the One performing them, proving that Jesus Christ has power and authority over all things.

He walks the church through six areas where that authority is on full display: social needs, physical needs, spiritual needs, the natural world, the spiritual world, and death itself. The first three miracles in Matthew 8 are performed on the social outcasts of the day — a leper, a Gentile centurion's servant, and a woman — showing that Jesus's power transcends every social barrier. He heals the paralytic's spiritual need before his physical one, calms a raging storm, casts out demons without flinching, and raises a synagogue ruler's daughter from the dead. And through it all, Jesus isn't ruling from a distance — He heals with touch, He calls people "son" and "daughter," and He is personally and intimately present in every moment of need.

The sermon lands with a pointed challenge: the power and authority of Jesus is only accessed by faith. Pastor Jay draws the contrast between the centurion — whose faith Jesus called the greatest He had seen in all of Israel — and the disciples in the storm, whose faith buckled under pressure. He closes with the story of a tightrope walker crossing Niagara Falls with a wheelbarrow, asking the gardener to get in. The application is clear: it's not enough to watch Jesus work in the lives of those around you. Today is the day to get in the wheelbarrow — to put your faith in Jesus Christ and access the fullness of His power and authority.
