Matthew | The Wisdom of Discernment | Week 20

Preaching through Matthew 7:1-6, Pastor Joel tackles one of the most misused topics in the Christian life — judging. His central goal is to draw a clear line between having a judgmental heart and exercising Biblical discernment. A judgmental heart, he explains, is the attitude of the Pharisees — always pointing to others and saying, "Here's me, here's you — see the difference?" Jesus, Pastor Joel reminds us, took five full verses to address that dangerous attitude, and only one verse to speak of discernment. That ratio alone tells us something important.  

Pastor Joel identifies three negative aspects of a judgmental heart: it is foolish, because the same measure we use on others will be measured back to us; it is prideful, like noticing a speck of sawdust in someone else's eye while a sequoia is sticking out of your own; and it is hypocritical, the very thing Jesus called the Pharisees out for — whitewashed tombs, clean on the outside and rotten within. Yet Pastor Joel is careful not to throw out discernment altogether. Drawing from Matthew 10 and Romans 1:16, he reminds us that followers of Jesus are called to share the precious pearl of the Gospel wisely, moving on when hearts prove hard and rebellious, not to win arguments, but to win hearts for Jesus.
