Matthew | Clean Hands, Pure Hearts | Week 12

In this message from Matthew 5:27-30, Pastor Joel continues his series through the Sermon on the Mount, focusing on Jesus' teaching about lust and adultery. He opens by acknowledging the discomfort many feel when the church addresses sexuality, but makes the case that silence is no longer an option. If the church won't speak truth on this topic, the world will — and it already is, loudly and without restraint, pouring its ideology into the lives of our children every single day.

Pastor Joel drives home Jesus' central theme throughout the Sermon on the Mount: the heart of the matter is a matter of the heart. Quoting D.A. Carson, he warns that sin must not be pampered or flirted with — it must be dealt with drastically and decisively. He walks through three action points: keeping our hearts pure, wearing "eye protection" by guarding what we allow our eyes to take in, and keeping our hands clean through immediate and even painful steps away from sin.

The sermon closes with a word of grace and hope. Just as Jesus showed compassion to the woman caught in adultery in John 8, he doesn't leave us condemned — he took our punishment to the cross. Pastor Joel reminds the congregation that 1 John 1:9 promises forgiveness and cleansing to all who confess, and encourages anyone wrestling with lust to act decisively today, trusting that this struggle does not define who they are in Christ.
