Matthew | Who is King Jesus | Week 27

Continuing a series through the Gospel of Matthew titled The King and His Kingdom, Pastor Joel picks up in Matthew 12 to examine six more characteristics of King Jesus. Where the religious leaders hardened their hearts and tried to trap Jesus over Sabbath rules, Jesus made it plain that He is the Lord of the Sabbath — greater than the temple itself — and that true favor with God comes not through obeying a checklist of religious rules, but through faith in Him. As Jesus declared in Matthew 12:6, "Something greater than the temple is here," and for that bold claim, the Pharisees wanted Him dead.
The sermon also unpacks some of the most misunderstood verses in Matthew — the so-called "unforgivable sin" of blaspheming the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:31-32). The pastor carefully places these verses in the broader context of Scripture, reminding the congregation that God is a deeply forgiving God who has pardoned everyone from King David to the apostle Paul. The blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is not a single careless word spoken in anger, but a willful, ongoing, and permanent rejection of the Spirit who draws people to Jesus. As the pastor put it plainly, "One cannot be saved if they pridefully and permanently reject the spirit of God" — but as long as there is breath in your lungs, there is still time to turn to Him.
The sermon closes with a call to full surrender, reading together the words of the old hymn I Surrender All. Whether someone in the room was a first-time seeker, a wandering believer, or someone holding on to faith by just a flicker, the invitation was the same: come to Jesus. He will not crush a bruised reed, and He will not quench a smoldering wick (Matthew 12:20).
